Autoresuscitation: A Case and Discussion of the Lazarus Phenomenon
نویسندگان
چکیده
Lazarus phenomenon or autoresuscitation is a very rare condition defined as delayed unassisted return of spontaneous circulation after cessation of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Based on a case with a 67-year-old male who came back to life after discontinuation of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, we discuss the background and possible countermeasures related to the Lazarus phenomenon.

Is increased positive end-expiratory pressure the culprit? Autoresuscitation in a 44-year-old man after prolonged cardiopulmonary resuscitation: a case report
BACKGROUND The phenomenon of autoresuscitation is rare, yet it is known to most emergency physicians. However, the pathophysiology of the delayed return of spontaneous circulation remains enigmatic. Among other causes hyperinflation of the lungs and excessively high positive end-expiratory pressure have been suggested, but reports including cardiopulmonary monitoring during cardiopulmonary resu...

A case is reported of the Lazarus phenomenon (the return of spontaneous circulation after cardiopulmonary resuscitation had been abandoned) in a patient following recreational drug use. The implications for management of cardiac arrest in the emergency department are discussed.

متن کاملThe Lazarus phenomenon
The Lazarus phenomenon or the unassisted return of spontaneous circulation after cardiac arrest is a grossly underreported phenomenon in medical literature which essentially implies the 'resurrection' of an individual after cardiac arrest. Although there have been a handful of such cases reported, the clinical incidence and significance may be underestimated. Because of the presumed infrequency...
متن کاملAutoresuscitation responses to hypoxia-induced apnea are delayed in newborn 5-HT-deficient Pet-1 homozygous mice.
Autoresuscitation is a critical survival-promoting mechanism in mammals that allows recovery from primary apnea via hypoxia-induced gasping. Here we show, using head-out plethysmography, that gasping behavior is altered during autoresuscitation, and the autoresuscitation response is delayed, in neonatal 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) neuron-deficient Pet-1 homozygous (Pet-1(-/-)) mice. When exposed...
